    Support Charities on Myspace

Filed under: Charity — Nemo Fairbrother @ 12:07 pm

Whether you love or hate Myspace you probably know someone with a profile on there, or have in a moment of weakness created one for yourself. If you have browsed myspace then you probably know how insanely popular, reviled & loved it is. What I want to focus on though is its popularity.

Advertising companies are now hiring people just to do advertising on myspace. Using guerilla/viral marketing companies have been targeting the myspace populace to advertise their products, to what success I’ve no idea and I’m not fan of consumerism but it got me thinking, if Myspace is a good place to advertise then what about advertising Charity on there?

I’ve found myself becoming more and more socially conscious in recent times, I find an anxiety seated somewhere deeply in me when I realize how little people know about the bad things that go on in the world. It’s not their fault, people have to get on with their lives, this is understandable. However I feel there is always something that will pique a persons curiosity and make them think outside of their selves of something that needs solving. I guess that’s what  activism is all about, and  this is what I have determined to do on Myspace.

As I said, advertising on Myspace. I decided that advocating Charities on myspace was the way to go. I don’t want to push things on people they don’t want, but I do want to raise peoples awareness, so  I set up myspace.com/showyourcolours.

The most common form of advertising on the web is without a doubt banner advertising. We have all seen them, and to some degree they do work. Frequently we will ignore them, because who cares about adverts about Viagra and Penis Enlargers. However, it’s not to say that we don’t take them in, and on this basis I felt banners would be an excellent  way of promoting charities on myspace. As you can see above I even have a badge for the page, Show Your Colours. I think that about says it, tell people what you are about, that you are thinking.

The greatest attraction to myspace is the chance to completely edit and customize your own profile to make it look like anything. If you check out mine (linked at the top of this post) you’ll see I have a photograph I took as the background, a giant turkey and some rapscallion squirrels up to much mischief. However the next profile you check will be completely different. This is the beauty of myspace.  This also opens up a potential for me to take advantage of.

As I said, Show Your Colours. To do that you visit my profile, myspace.com/showyourcolours and pick a banner from a charity you support and put it on your own profile. It’s very easy to do and then anyone who comes to your profile will see a banner advertising that charity.

I don’t want to advocate one charity over another though, so I am adding as many as I can. Whether it’s Cancer, Environmental, Mental Health or something else it will be going on Show Your Colours. This is an ongoing project, less then 7 days old so it will hopefully grow significantly over the next month. Let’s hope so!
